A Cubit a Day
Nobody records the weather during the construction. That is the detail that matters. The ark — the most consequential building project in the old stories — was raised under a clear sky, over years, in front of neighbors who saw no clouds. The work was not dramatic. It was dimensional: so many cubits, this wood and not that wood, pitch inside and out.
I used to think discipline was intensity. It is actually specification. A habit survives contact with an ordinary Tuesday only if it has been reduced to lumber and measurements: this hour, this desk, this many words or pounds or pages, rain or shine — mostly shine, which is harder.
Build to spec on the clear days. The flood does not schedule an appointment, and by the time you can see the water, the wood is either cut or it is not.
