The Varangian

Oath Before Mood

June 11, 2026 · 1 minute read

The Varangians were far from home by definition. That was the arrangement: northern men in a southern empire, guarding a throne that was not theirs, in a language they learned late. What made them legendary was not ferocity. It was that their word did not depend on their surroundings.

The displaced modern man is in the same position without knowing it. The village that would have enforced his code is gone; the empire he works for is indifferent to it. So the code must be carried the way the guard carried theirs — internally, by oath, sworn once and consulted daily, especially on the days when mood argues for exemption.

Mood is weather. Oath is architecture. A man who acts on how he feels is a man whose walls move. Decide the code on a strong day, write it down, and then let the weak days find the decision already made.
